The Ney (also nai, nye, nay) is an end-blown flute _like wind instrument . It is
one of the oldest musical instruments still in use. It is a forerunner of the modern
flute.
This website is devoted to the Egyptian (Arabic) Ney which will be the focus of
all our future discussions.
There are hardly any materials available about this four thousand
years old instrument.
The Ney considered to be one of the most difficult Middle Eastern musical
instruments and the most charming one (in my opinion).
I studied the nay in Egypt (my home country) and I have the chance to meet
with many professional Nay players and makers, we discussed some of the
challenges that face both the players and the makers
And we conclude the importance of information sharing as a very important tool
for progress.
Then I moved to the California where the greatest of all Ney players lives, the
humble Nay magician Dr.A.J. Racy.
Dr.Racy is the Head of the Ethnomusicology Department at UCLA (University of
California Los Angeles).
He has a deep understanding about not only the ney and Middle Eastern
music but the world music.
I studied his method and I was amazed the amount of knowledge and the way he
treated the problems associated with the Ney playing techniques.
Dr.Racy developed an accurate, practical and easy to apply method I will call it
Racy method.
He inspired me to construct this website to share with the world the secrets of this
Magical instrument.
I will try to make it simple as much as I can with photo illustrations.
I hope Racy method will help fill in some gabs and encourage more to play and
to improve.
Sincerely moheb
